Jacob L Brown
Founder & Principal
Jake Brown has been involved in the real estate development and general construction industry from a very young age. Since founding The Marian Group and its associated companies, he has actively led over $300 million of development, management and construction work.
Projects he has led have amassed 13 awards for excellence, while Marian has developed an outstanding reputation for honesty, leadership, non-profit involvement, and outsized returns to investors, stakeholders, clients and the community.
Early in his career, Mr. Brown was Project Manager and General Superintendent for Cardinal Industrial Services, providing industrial and commercial hazardous environmental cleanup to clients like Dow Chemical, Rohm and Haas, DuPont Chemical, PNC Bank and Humana.
An experienced developer with a passion for repurposing and repositioning historic, bank owned, foreclosed or stalled real estate assets, Mr. Brown is knowledgeable in the structuring and implementation of multiple financing strategies including bank, private equity, taxable and non-taxable bond issuance, and Federal and State Historic Tax Credits.
Justin joined The Marian Group in 2012. He is primarily responsible for developing and implementing Marian’s growth strategy, new business and project development, and spearheading the company’s financing and fundraising needs.
Notable projects include Marian’s ongoing redevelopment of the 12-acre Urban Government Center, Bradford Mills Lofts, the University of Louisville MFA campus and multiple Family Scholar House (FSH) campuses across Kentucky. Additionally, he has led Marian’s portfolio investments into real estate tech companies Pillow and Rentlytics and social tech company Mobileserve.
Prior to joining Marian, Justin was an Associate with J.P. Morgan’s Investment Banking Division in New York City. Before that, he spent three years with Bank of America’s Debt Products Group underwriting senior and mezzanine debt for large ($5M+) real estate projects.
He did his undergraduate work at the University of South Carolina and received his MBA from Georgetown University in Washington, DC where he also worked with American Capital Strategies on turning around a lifestyle-products portfolio company.
Paul F Resch
Chief Operating Officer
Paul is Marian’s Chief Operating Officer, responsible for much of the day-to-day administration and operation of the business in addition to creating operations strategies and policies and building employee alignment with company goals.
Paul has more than 38 years of operations, sales, and management experience in commercial construction and manufacturing. His experiences have been far reaching from overseeing start-ups of new companies to the acquisitions of supporting products and services that fostered the growth of the business model.
Prior to joining Marian, he served as Director of Dant Edge (a division of Dant Clayton), which encompassed catalog sales, project management, company warranty program and customer services. Prior to his time with Dant Clayton, he invested time in his career managing the MBE, WMBE and VBE Programs for ASI Limited, a commercial glass and glazing contractor. He started his career in the early 1980’s with Ryder Systems a fortune 500 company.
Paul is a graduate of the University of Louisville, BS in Marketing. He resides on multiple boards, School Board of Trinity High School, Co-Founder of Marc Lehmann Spirit of Service Foundation and past president of the Kentucky Chapter of the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.
Chief Financial Officer
James is Marian’s Chief Financial Officer and oversees accounting, finance, tax, risk management, strategic and financial planning. In addition, he works on the financial aspects of acquisitions, dispositions, and lender financing for multi-family and commercial real estate projects.
James has more than 15-years of real estate development and management experience, overseeing the financial growth of companies alongside the development or redevelopment of large apartment communities and office parks. In addition, he has experience with the structuring, planning, and the successful private placement offerings for four real estate investment funds.
Prior to joining Marian, he served as the COO for Hagan Properties, as well as CFO for Sun Residential, Denton-Floyd Real Estate Group, Aslan Ventures, and as Controller at Fenley Real Estate.
James is a graduate of Bellarmine University, a CPA, and a Chartered Global Management Accountant. He currently serves on the School Board for St. Mary’s Academy and is a past board member for the Norton Commons YMCA. In addition, he has also served on both the Greater Louisville Association of Realtors Finance Committee, and the Kentucky Society of CPAs Leadership Council.
Vice President - Development
Kimberly Stephenson is Marian’s Vice President of Development and actively leads the global development process for all of the company’s projects. With Marian since 2006, Kimberly and her team are responsible for project due diligence, coordination of project financial partners and key personnel, and the operations of all of the company’s affordable housing activities.
Her time with the company has seen her manage and coordinate over $150 million in various project funds while her deal leadership has been invaluable to Marian’s growth. Kimberly has over 16-years of experience in the housing development industry including the utilization of State and Federal Historic Tax Credits.
Prior to joining Marian, Kimberly worked in banking with Fifth Third Bank and Neighborhood Development Corporation; the oldest nonprofit housing developer in Louisville. She is actively involved in the development and preservation community in Louisville and is a fully certified Housing Credit Certified Specialist. Kimberly graduated from the University of Louisville in 1999 with a degree in political science.
Director of Operations
Katie joined the Marian Group in 2006. Starting as a part time Office Assistant while pursuing her degree in Sociology at the University of Louisville, she has worked across all parts of the company, expanding her knowledge of development, construction and project management. A valuable source of institutional knowledge, Katie now serves as the Director of Operations and is responsible for all of Marian’s corporate operations and HR functions in addition to coordinating with Marian’s CFO and COO on long-term planning and corporate fiscal responsibility.
In addition to her primary corporate role, Katie manages many of Marian’s subsidiary companies providing back office support in estimation/bidding, scheduling, and project management, which most recently included the development and construction of the new University of Louisville Hite Art Institute in Portland. Her financial oversight of Marian subsidiary Blacksmith Iron Works resulted in growth from $519K at this divisions inception to becoming an independent, standalone company with more than $2MM in active projects in 2018.
In her spare time, you can find Katie working out and enjoying time on the lake with her husband, family and friends.
Scarlet serves as Asset Manager for The Marian Group’s stabilized portfolio. She conducts market research for projects prior to lease up commencement, advises the team on trends that will impact milestones at placed in service, monitors compliance and financial activity, and collaborates with property management on ongoing property operations. Key to these activities is her function as the owner representative, communicating with project syndicators, investors, and lenders.
Prior to joining Marian in 2015, Scarlet spent nearly 8 years at PNC Real Estate, holding positions in both the compliance and workout departments of their LIHTC syndication segment. Before PNC, Scarlet worked in retail banking at Bank of America and Pacific Continental Bank. Scarlet graduated with Honors from the University of Oregon in 2005 with a degree in Psychology.
James joined The Marian Group in 2016 as a Development Associate and is primarily responsible for project feasibility, pre-development, and execution across a variety of asset types and project sizes.
Prior to joining Marian, James was an Accountant & Project Manager for Oracle Design Group, Inc. where he managed development and construction services of multi-family and single-family housing. Before that, he worked in public accounting in both tax and assurance services.
James has worked on 11 large projects totaling $101.5 Million and producing 630 residential units structured with various financing mechanisms such as Federal & State Historic Tax Credits, LIHTC, HOME, CDBG, AHTF, FHLB, & conventional bank debt.
He completed his undergraduate work at the University of Kentucky and received a double major, with honors, in Accounting & History.
In his spare time, you can find James renovating historic homes or enjoying the outdoors.
Jana is Marian’s Development Coordinator and is primarily responsible for managing third party engagements for all projects, coordinating all billing and insurance requirements, as well as providing project support for all phases of the cycle.
Prior to joining Marian in 2018, Jana spent nearly 4-years in Single Family Home Construction coordinating and managing the entire process—sale-to-construction-to-close—for over 200 homes at one time. Before that, she spent four years with J.P. Morgan’s Student Lending and Auto Finance divisions providing quality assurance audits and mentoring to fellow colleagues.
Jana graduated from the Kelley School of Business, Indiana University, with a double major in Marketing and Supply Chain Management. Jana is also Six Sigma Green Belt certified which is a set of techniques and tools used to improve business processes by utilizing statistical analysis.
Amy serves as the Office Manager for The Marian Group and joined the team in 2015. Amy coordinates office administration in order to ensure organizational effectiveness and provides day-to-day administration support for the entire Marian team and its subsidiaries. Her major responsibilities include communication and information technology support coordination, supplies, equipment procurement and accounts payable.
Prior to joining Marian, Amy had extensive experience in office management roles, including 15-years in Washington, D.C. as office manager for a variety of large real-estate agencies in excess of 150 agents and support staff.
Amy is a military wife (retired) with a Can-Do Attitude and is an expert baker. In her spare time, she enjoys volleyball, baking and spending time with family and friends.
